Policy on AI

The New Czech at Home and Abroad’s Policy on AI

The editors of The New Czech at Home and Abroad agree with the stance of Charles University, the publisher of our journal, on the use of AI: AI technology can be useful for students, teachers and researchers. If utilized responsibly and ethically, AI can be used to make a valuable contribution to education and research; however, overreliance on AI poses a problem to scholarship. The use of AI tools should only complement, not replace, one’s own ideas and work. Presenting AI-generated results in their literal or slightly modified form as one’s own work is considered plagiarism. Additionally, AI can be dangerous to research and scholarship if the generated content is not vetted critically and verified.

The leadership of Charles University particularly warns the academic community about security threats that have been identified in some generative-AI programs. We highly recommend that scholars do not use DeepSeek in their academic work. Scholars should also be extremely wary of using chatbots from China, such as Alibaba’s Qwen – using tools and programs developed and maintained by state actors representing countries with limited academic freedom may introduce inappropriate influence on academic activities and threaten institutional integrity. A tentative list of recommended and vetted tools is available here.

Authors may use generative AI or AI-assisted technology to improve the readability, language, grammar and style of a submission; AI should not replace key parts of the research process, such as analysis and interpreting data. It is prohibited to use generative AI or AI-assisted technology to create or edit images in submitted manuscripts. If authors use generative AI or AI-assisted technology at any time during the creation of a manuscript, they must declare this in their manuscript. This statement will appear in the final form of the journal article. Stating the use of these technologies promotes transparency among authors and readers, as well as editors and reviewers.
